Maurice Kelso Award

Following the 1978 New Zealand Concert Tour undertaken by the John Forrest Concert Band and Guitar Ensemble, there was a sum of money remaining in the tour fund.

Parents decided that it should be invested and the interest used to enable an annual award to be made to a music student to assist with their music education. The Award, made for the first time in 1979, is known as the Maurice Kelso Award, in recognition of Mr Kelso's active interest in and support of music during his time as Principal of the College from 1971 to 1979.

The requirements of the award are:

  • Satisfactory progress on an instrument being studied at school, including good practice record.
  • Satisfactory progress in class music.
  • A good attitude to music studies.

Senior School students at John Forrest Secondary College are eligible to apply for the Kelso Scholarship Award of $200 and no student may win the award more than once.

Application is made by written application and an interview with the Music Department teachers. The award recipient is announced at the end of the preceding year.
