2022 Year 10 Work Experience

In Week 8 Term 2, 144 Year 10 students from John Forrest Secondary College (JFSC) completed a one-week block of Work Experience as part of their Career Development Program.

Students attended an array of workplaces in a variety of industries. As a result of this experience, some students were offered casual employment. This experience helps them decide on their career pathways and provides clarity for Senior School subject selections.

Why Should Year 10s Take Part in Work Experience?

In the workplace students get to learn new skills.

Initiative, problem-solving, communication and self-management skills are transferrable to every workplace.

There is no better way for students to develop these important employability skills, and an understanding of different industry areas, than being in a real workplace.

This is also a time for networking opportunities and, importantly, helping students consider their careers pathway and further study.

Work experience is also about increasing student understanding of basic workplace skills, with students placed with employers primarily to observe and learn – not to undertake activities which require extensive training or expertise.

Reasons for Students to do Work Experience!

  1. Builds confidence, motivation, and initiative.
  2. You are meeting new people/friends, networking!
  3. It improves your communication skills, you find out about your strengths and weaknesses
  4. Students on work experience learn more about the world of work
  5. Helps you with making your career decisions, you may have thought you always wanted to be in that industry, and now have changed your mind.
  6. Gives you enthusiasm to be successful at school and achieve career goals
  7. You are away from the school curriculum learning new skills
  8. Work experience builds your resume, you can receive glowing references, even new tickets, certificates and licences.

AND more importantly, you could be lucky enough to be offered a job!

Reasons for Employers to offer students Work Experience!

  1. It helps their other employees, they can learn about supervision, leadership and mentoring, great on their resume for promotion.
  2. Good branding for the company.
  3. Helps you spot future talent.
  4. Students build enthusiasm and often come with new ideas.
  5. Recruitment strategy, looking to hire Trainees/Apprentices.
  6. Helps them mature, develop skills and work readiness.
  7. Helping the community.

The Work Experience Program takes immense organisation from students, parents, employers and staff.
