Style-ish saxophone wisdom shared
Our saxophone students were lucky enough to have a workshop with Dr Matt Styles from WAAPA on Thursday 10 March.
First, they were treated to a performance of Ku Ku by Barry Cockcroft, performed by Dr Styles on the soprano saxophone. Dr Styles spoke of many things saxophone. He explained why the saxophone was created in the first place.
James Taylforth in Year 11 performed a piece for the group on the alto saxophone and after receiving praise for his performance, there was sound advice on how to produce a fuller sound and play faster. There was also a discussion about Dr Styles' mouthpiece collection, the importance of a good ligature, as well as what sort of reeds to use.
We appreciated having Dr Styles visit us and there are already discussions for further connections between our music students and WAAPA in the near future.
James Taylforth: It was great! I really enjoyed learning how I could further improve my saxophone skills. I learned about developing a better sound by blowing more air into my instrument and changing my embouchure. The whole experience was awesome!
