JFSC alumnus inspires next generation

Over the past few weeks Dance students from Years 9-12 have been honoured to participate in workshops run by John Forrest alumnus Denzel Mahusay.

Since graduating from JFSC, Denzel has gone on to become an artist with many strings to his bow. He is a hip hop performer, crew dancer, DJ and all-round nice guy. Affectionately known as Den Den, he strives to spread the love and fun of dance, delivering it wrapped up in boundless energy and vibes.

His love of the Performing Arts started at John Forrest where he discovered the intricacies of music, sounds and beats at the same time as encountering movement and dance. This led him to explore and produce original, electronic mixes, samples and choreography that embody his grooves, moods and style.

Denzel's career has seen him perform in battles, locally and nationally, special guest in musicals, teach an array of workshops, travel the world dancing and create and perform in videos.

When Denzel teaches, he uses the lens of the real world to give context, sharing insight into dance, life and being the best person, you can be. Not to mention the inspiring dance, performance and industry knowledge imparted.

Denzel thank you for giving back to your school community. We loved having you!

Student Testimonials:

"I really enjoyed Denzel's enthusiasm, patience and attitude in his lesson as well as his own unique style of dance. I learnt a lot more about fluidity of movement and how well looseness can look in dance……. I hope he comes around again!"  - Laila Augustine

"…. Denzel did an amazing job at teaching the class a very fast, swift and joyful choreography under an hour. With his confidence and never-ending hype Denzel, his class was engaging…." - Howell Fermano

"My biggest takeaway from Denzel's class was that it's alright to not have it down perfectly, that I should trust myself that I'll improve along the way. That makingmistakes, is normal and should be accepted, as it's how we learn. I loved how enthusiastic and uplifting Denzel was. I overall really enjoyed his workshop! The fast-paced and choreography-filled class pushed me and though it was a lot more difficult than what I'm used to, in the short time we had, it taught me to understand my body and how I move." - Lorene Mamangun

"I enjoyed every minute of the class due to him being interactive with everyone and he didn't make anyone feel out of place. He encouraged everyone to do their best and overall he was really good company to have." - Annie Nguyen

"I really enjoyed his class! It was great to feel the energy he provided and how he would hype us up during the dance, the occasional words of wisdom were also refreshing to hear. It was slightly more fast-paced than expected but it was an enjoyable new experience" - Rain Lozaga
