2023 Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week
26 May is National Sorry Day and proceeds Reconciliation Week (27th May - 3rd June). To recognise these significant dates, John Forrest students were asked to each create a Native Hibiscus flower. The native hibiscus has been approved by the National Stolen Generations Alliance as the official symbol for Sorry Day. According to the Kimberley Stolen Generations Aboriginal Corporation, the native hibiscus "was adopted because it is found widely across Australia, and it is a survivor. Its colour denotes compassion and spiritual healing".
During Reconciliation Week, the flowers were assembled to create a garland which is displayed in a major walkway. The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2023 is "Be A Voice For Generations". We believe that this activity encourages students to ask questions and have conversations about reconciliation and how they themselves can be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in their everyday lives.
