Exploring a variety of career pathways
Our dedicated Pathways Hub provides students with comprehensive information on career options and opportunities available to them as they explore future pathways beyond their secondary schooling.
In consultation with parents and caregivers, our Pathways team assists students to navigate their way to making the best decisions for them, whether that be introducing them to new industries, providing a space for practical experience, or assistance with course selection and applications.
Here is a snapshot of events and activities our students have been invited to this term:
Interview 2 Impress
As part of our long running partnership with ABCN, twenty of our Year 11s and 12s participated in the Interview 2 Impress program whereby they worked in small groups alongside mentors from American Express. Throughout the day the students became increasingly comfortable with the corporate employees, asked questions, and increased their knowledge of working life and employer expectations. They gained useful tips and put into practise learned interview skills. The genuine, friendly and practical feedback the students received was invaluable, as evidenced in their comments:
"It was engaging and educational. A lot of valuable information." | "Thank you for being so kind and open to share and listen." |
"I found it enjoyable and helpful and very useful. Thank you." | "Thank you for teaching us useful skills that we can transfer to our work-life one day." |
"This was very enjoyable. The activities will hone my communication skills." | "So friendly, approachable, and helpful!! Thank you." |
Auslan Career Taster
A wonderful day of teamwork and collaboration that enabled fifteen Year 9s to acquire and practise some Auslan language, learned through the very effective immersion method. But more importantly, the group gained an understanding of the strengths of the deaf community and how they see themselves.
The Year 9s' interest and enthusiasm were evident in the numerous questions they asked our warm and friendly teachers and Auslan interpreters who shared heartfelt personal stories and practical information about ethical considerations working as an interpreter. It was a brilliant experience where students not only gained information about employment opportunities available for people with Auslan language skills but also developed their cultural responsiveness and ethical integrity capabilities.
Events Career Taster
A group of Year 9 students recently gained an insight into aspects of a career in the events industry when they participated in a Career Taster at North Metro TAFE's Joondalup campus.
Following a presentation about the range of careers in the field and event management, with real life examples of student success and job pathways, the group put their fabulous creative, technical and collaborative capabilities to the test. They brainstormed the skills needed to plan, organise and execute an event and completed some research on local vendors who could supply all that was needed. The afternoon involved the practical activities typical of a role in events, including: special event table styling where students had only 15 mins to plan and design a bespoke table setting; event registration; organisation and set up; and creation of digital invitations to their own dream 16th birthday party. This experience allowed students to extend their thinking about career opportunities and pathways through practical activities and meaningful experiences with the world of work.
