Bush Rangers Semester 1
The John Forrest Bush Ranger Cadets have had a jam packed first semester.
Kicking off the year with Kayaking we spent several warm afternoons on the Derbarl Yerrigan, learning about water safety and how to manage the single kayaks. Our full day excursion saw the cadets putting these new skills to the test on the Canning River followed by a bird watching activity, hosted by the Canning River Eco Education Centre. It was a fantastic way to start of the year and a reminder of how lucky we are to have access to these natural wonders.
At the start of Term 2 the cadets have had some exceptional experiences and gained a better understanding of our abundant natural flora and fauna and the efforts that go into looking after our beautiful wetlands, with the support of the Environment Officers at Bayswater City Council. From damper making to water testing and an up-close encounter with some very cute critters, it’s been a blast!
The Bush Ranger Cadets have had the great pleasure of participating in a workshop run by Angela Rossen. Angela is an artist and Biodiversity Educator. During the workshops, cadets made use of Angela's equipment to photograph mini beasts to use as subjects for drawing. In the second week, Angela shared her technique for painting wildlife. We plan to submit the artwork created, in an upcoming exhibition at Ellis House in Bayswater.
The Week 7 Term 2 Bush Ranger activity was a visit to and a tour of the Lightning Swamp Bushland. The cadets were met by the Bayswater Council Conservation Team who shared, not just their passion for our local bushland but their knowledge of this amazing local space. Lightning Swamp Bushland is considered a nature hotspot, specifically due to its significant biodiversity and conservation value. It’s one of the largest bushland reserves in the City of Bayswater, representing a crucial remnant of the natural Swan Coastal Plain landscape.
