Reconciliation Week 2025
During Weeks 5 and 6 of Term 2, John Forrest Secondary College celebrated National Reconciliation Week.
Held annually from May 27 to June 3, which is a time for all Australians to learn about the country's shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how they can contribute to reconciliation. It's a time to celebrate the unique cultures and history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and to strengthen relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
The theme for 2025 is Bridging Now to Next which reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future.
Form teachers were encouraged to play a video educating students on National Sorry Day – Monday 26 May 2025.
Throughout the week, form classes were completing an activity where students were asked to work in groups and write down what our reconciliation journey looks like currently and in the future. A display of these submissions is currently being put together.
Thursday 29 May, all staff were encouraged to Wear it Yellow and provide a gold coin donation which goes to Children’s Ground. Children’s Ground is led by First Nations communities who are creating a different future for the next generation of children.
Friday 30 May, a group of students attended a City of Bayswater event at the Maylands Yacht Club where they listened to Elders talk about the local area and history. The students enjoyed a delicious lunch of kangaroo stew and damper. On arrival back to school, the students were sharing stories on what they took away from the day.
Stay tuned for our upcoming NAIDOC celebrations in Term 3.
