Yr 7 enRICHment - Like a Boss, a $20 Boss

Mrs Gatti's Year 7 enRICHment class have been participating in a program called '$20 Boss'.

What is $20 Boss?

$20 Boss is a program designed to equip young people with enterprise skills such as project management, financial literacy, teamwork, communication, digital literacy, problem solving, critical thinking and global citizenship. Students receive $20 of start-up money to create their own business over a school term. They develop a business concept and run their venture for a month, with the aim to create profit. At the end of business trading participants pay back the $20 with a $1 legacy donation (like interest) and have the choice to donate any profit to the school or a charity of their choice, or retain a portion for themselves to invest in the continuation of their business. - FYA $20 Boss

We thought the best way to share the experience, was to hand it over to the students. Here are the articles written by the Year 7 enRICHment class in their own words, their experience and what they learnt during the $20 Boss program:

Dakota Willis "Let's Eat"

$20 boss was a very hard program with all the fights we had, or you may call them, disagreements.  Our group had many ideas all thrown in the middle but we decided to focus on one idea.  We had to run a business from scratch with a startup budget of $20 for each student. At the end we had to pay that back and then donate our profits to charity.

We began this program at the start of the year, honestly I didn't think it was going to be possible to finish all the work with all the drama in and out of class. The people in my group were , Aaliyah, Melba, Lily, Casey-lee, Louise, Breeanna and myself.  We all decided on baking cupcakes because I thought that people would buy food and that would mean that we would raise more money for the Love Your Sister Foundation and have a successful business. The flavours of cupcakes we decided to make were Red Velvet, Chocolate and Vanilla.

Melba, Aaliyah and Casey-lee baked the cupcakes at Melba's house after school each day so they would be fresh and more people would like fresh cupcakes than stale ones each day. Casey-lee, Lily and I made the toasted sandwiches. I thought about how many people would go crazy for toasties and asked my group what they thought about it and they loved the idea. We made them at school 4th period before lunch started so they were fresh. We made them in class (room 3) and in the toasties there was tomato, mayo, cheese and ham, depending on what people ordered.

So much hard work got put into this and it was a very bumpy journey to get to the stage we got but it was so worth it.

Kira Byass "Colour Your Day"

For my business I made a mini notebook an big note book and bookmarks. I made the mini and big note book by using bumpy card, a glue gun, stapler and paper. I made the book marks by printing the templates and I made the tassels with wool. I decided to do it because my original idea was scrappy and would have taken too long to put together. I worked with Amelia because she wanted to work with me, even though she isn't in our class. She came in each day and helped me with my stall.  The planning was the hardest part of running my business because it was hard work. I think I learnt that finances are important and I would you to other students doing the project next year that Yes it was worth doing.

Cruze Hyde "Plants Make You Happy"

My business was selling succulents in small soy sauce pots for $5-$10. We then changed to teacups and teapots because people liked them so much.  Making them was easy I  just got pots and plants from my house.  I decided on this idea because I knew that a lot of people would buy them.  It was just me in my business because I wanted to be by myself.  The hardest part of running the business was getting the plants because I always forgot to bring them them into class to put them together.  I learnt from this project how it feels to run a business.  This was fun and helps you learn how to run a business.   And I would say it was it worth doing, yes it was very fun.

Conner Lowdon "CL's HC"

My business was that I made hot chocolate to sell to everyone who loves it.

I made it by getting a takeaway cup, filled 2 teaspoons with chocolate mix, filled 1 cup of milk, heated the milk for 1 minute, after poured the milk into the cup and stirred it until it looked good and tasted hot. I decided on the idea because I loved hot chocolate since I was 7 years old. I worked by myself because I know how to make my hot chocolate.

...

Trell Morgan and Lochie Fenu "B-Ballerz"

Our business was a basketball team that you could join and try to win to get a basketball for each of your team mates. Me and Lochlan used the gym to play the basketball game and we decided on it because Lochlan and I love basketball. I worked with Lochlan because he is a good friend and I love to hangout with him. The hardest part of running my business was selling the product and it was the hardest thing because I am really shy. I think I learnt how to start a business. I would say to other students doing the project next year to try your best. It was really fun, especially because people came to play and win the basketballs.
