PREFECTS TACKLE PLASTIC POLLUTION
Our Prefects spent their last day of Term 2 getting involved with a non for profit organisation to help make a difference. Prefects and staff teamed up with volunteers at Boomerang Bags- Noranda and Surrounds to make re-usable bags using recycled materials, as a means to provide a sustainable alternative to plastic bags.
Students learned that there are multiple steps involved when making a re-usable bag and that it is best done as a team. Students cycled through individual stations giving each student the opportunity to measure and cut the material, pin it iron it, screen print the logos and sew it all together, eventually producing a bag.
For most students this was their first time working on a project like this, therefore they didn't have the skills or experience required. But that didn't stop them. It was awesome to see those students who had the knowledge helping those who didn't and to see everyone willing to just have a go regardless.
One student said "I don't mind if I don't get to take a bag home today, I love just being a part of something that makes a difference". We think that is the perfect way to summarise the day.
