Year 7 Home Economics with Mrs Martinelli
This year it has been my pleasure to work with the Year 7's, during their six-month course covering nutrition, cooking and basic sewing techniques. With our two periods per week, we were kept busy learning and demonstrating culinary skills. Most students love the chance to be able to learn with these 'hands on' lessons despite the time constraints we face every lesson. In the sewing component of the course, it was a delight to witness students so actively engaged with their hand crafts that there was silence. A rarity these days!
Recently I asked the students to do a quick review of what they thought of the course. For example, what did they think Home Economics would be like, what did they enjoy, something they learnt and what was their funniest/scariest moment? Below are some responses and they make for some interesting reading!
"My funniest moment was seeing Jared sing with Carlos the Cactus (his monster feltie)." Zach
"Mrs Martinelli likes knives." Jared
"I liked learning how to do a blanket stitch and enjoyed practising." Hannah
"Home Economics was the highlight of my day, it wasn't stressful and was loads of fun." Max
"I thought it was fast paced, action packed and fun." Sam C
"I learnt how to sew for the first time and sew on a button." Summer
"We made lots of cool stuff like, winter fruit salad, mini pizzas, tomato salsa and pita crisps and oh yeah, the French toast was good." Luka
"My funniest moment was when one of our eggs exploded." Abby
"I enjoyed the cooking, it was fun to work together and show our skills with the oven and stove." Holly
"I learnt how to cook a soft and a hard-boiled egg perfectly." Julian
"I was scared I was going to burn the room down." Shannia (the room is fine!)
There is no truth to these rumours:
- A certain teacher may have forgotten to remind students to add bicarb soda to a recipe and the muffins may not have been a huge success!
- A certain teacher may have discussed her dislike of the children's show, 'The Telletubbies' and how the class erupted into laughter at her impression of them.
Thank you to all the Year 7's that I have taught this year. It has been a delight to work with you and get to know you. Keep up with your skills and hope to see you in Year 9. Happy holidays.
