$20 Boss enriches students learning
Starting a business from scratch with only $20 is a daunting thought, however our Year 7 enRICHment students have risen to the challenge throughout Term 3 and 4 and this has led to our $20 Boss Market during Week 3 in Room 3. The range of products and services that students made and sold were highly original and showcased the vast abilities of the class. Behind the scenes Ms Wray and myself have been impressed by the way the group has helped each other to make and finish things as well as celebrating each other's success and helping serve and operate each other's businesses.
The Foundation for Young Australians, the entrepreneurial foundation who supports this project across Australian schools, offers prizes to recognise the excellence of these micro businesses and this year we are thrilled that two of our student businesses have made it to the national finals for these awards and will be flying to Melbourne soon for the final judging. Jorjino has really embraced his first year at John Forrest and he has been keen to share his love of drawing and cartoons all year so turning this into a small drawing lesson to help people feel happy and reduce their stress was a great start to his project. Hazen's beanie hats came from his own wish to see the colours of the aboriginal flag around more often, he was homesick for his country up north and thought that if more aboriginal people could see the colours of the flag, and the animal tracks that they would feel "happy, proud and warm", so he found a pattern with Ms Wray and they copied, cut, sewed and packaged these fantastic beanies throughout the term.
We have been especially proud of the low/no single use packaging this year, with all food being served in recycled or upcycled containers and all products being sold with labels only to be good for the planet and reduce our use. It was a wonderful project for our students and really showed the rest of the college what these young people were capable of when given the opportunity to shine.
We are excited to announce that after a week of sales every stall covered their costs and made a profit. Over the week $510 was raised which the students have chosen to donate to RAW Impact, Love Your Sister and to Mr Glossop's JFSC Breakfast Club.
