2019 Youth Civics Leadership Day
On Monday 13 May two Year 10 students, Alexandra Adams and Josie Simmonds-Lacey were invited to participate in the Youth Civics Leadership Day event at the Old Court House Law Museum as part of Law Week. To be invited students had to demonstrate leadership skills and/or civic awareness within the College and/or the community. The day allowed participants to build on their leadership skills and civic awareness by interacting with like-minded students and young legal professionals.
Students began the day with a lecture on the "Rule of Law". This was followed by a presentation by Catrina-Luz Aniere from Millennium Kids on the work happening in rural Indigenous communities and Cat's own experiences helping young people reconnect with their culture and teaching others about it. The morning session finished with 1999 Young Australian of the Year and Paralympic World Champion Swimmer Priya Cooper sharing her inspiring story about learning to motivate yourself and find the good in a difficult situation.
During the lunch break students were able to meet and converse with young lawyers, finding out about their high school experiences and what lead them to pursue a Legal career. This was followed by the session titled Learning to Lead where students participated in activities that helped develop their leadership skills.
The day concluded with certificates being presented to both Alexandra and Josie by the Chief Justice of Western Australia, the Honourable Peter Quinlan. The HASS Department would like to thank both girls for representing the College in such a fine manner.
