On Tuesday 7 May Year 11 and 12 students from the Computer Science ATAR and Certificate II Information Digital Media and Technology courses travelled to Murdoch University to attend the BiG Day In (Perth). Students were able to gain an insight into the future of technology and how they can get involved in shaping this future.
Students heard from leaders in the global industry including Michelle Sandford (Microsoft), Dr Tim Kitchen (Adobe) and Ben Leane (Avanade), as well members of the Australian Technology Industry including Dennis Prior (Department of Human Services), Stephane Bullier & Jake Chance (Technology One), Captain Kaitlin Gilbert & Captain Chloe MacLachlan (Defence Force Recruiting), Charlotte van der Meulen (Westpac), and members of the WiseTech Global Ltd Team and Bankwest Graduates.
Students were also able to have one-on-one chats with industry exhibitors to learn about different career options are available to them and how to get to where they want to go.
The Big Day In Perth conference at Murdoch University was a great opportunity to explore the different career options in the information & communications technology sector. At one point, a multinational company offered paid internships to undergraduate students. IT isn't just about writing code in front of a computer. The industry needs more creative analysts and artists to take on more consumer-centric roles. Overall, I believe it was a good chance to talk to leading professionals in cyber security, artificial intelligence and enterprise software. Thanks to all the people I met at the conference, now I have a clearer picture of my future. - Si Wei Lin (Year 12)
Murdoch each year hosts The Big Day In. This is an information, communication and technologies conference. On this day students all over Western Australia who share an interest in technological advancements are invited to come sit at the conference. At this conference many guest speakers from different organisations such as Google, Adobe and Microsoft. We the students of John Forrest Secondary College were the smallest group present with just under 14 students attending. We walked into a huge gazebo lined with hundreds of chairs seating other schools. The guest speakers spoke on topics that were engaging and capturing. We all sat down and the first speaker began until morning break. During morning and lunch break there was another large gazebo with all the guest speakers at their stands. The day was fun, we took many photos and talked to a lot of people. Some of us decided what we are doing for our future while others enjoyed the day off school. We walked around Murdoch and noticed the chill vibe of University life. Although most of our time was spent sitting on seats and actively listening to the presenters. It was a big day at The Big Day In. - Danish Khan (Year 12)
