Identifying Mutations
On Monday 2 September students from Year 12 Human Biology travelled to the Harry Perkins Institute in Nedlands as part of their studies into genetics and inheritance.
Students started the day amplifying the potentially mutated BRAF gene using PCR (Polymerase chain reaction). Identifying this mutation can lead to improvements in melanoma treatment options. This was followed by a sequencing exercise which gave students a better understanding into how mutations occur and what various mutations can look like. Students then went back into the lab to conduct a gel electrophoresis which allowed students to utilise research-grade equipment and reagents. The day concluded with a tour of the facilities at the Harry Perkins Institute.

Many thanks to the Harry Perkins Institute for allowing our students to access this fantastic purpose built facility.
