Year 10's Solve Pipeline Problems
At the beginning of July the Year 10 cohort was treated to a visit from Earth Science WA as part of the CSIRO Outreach Program.
During this visit, students explored and engaged their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) skills to problem solve real-world issues.
The purpose of this incursion was to give students an understanding of the people and processes involved in creating solutions to issues of the 21st Century.
It involves important skill sets and a different way of thinking and doing that allows people to work together to solve problems and challenges. Teamwork is an essential STEM skill, allowing people with strengths in each of the STEM areas to work together and have a greater impact.
Students were to asked put their own teamwork skills into action, designing a hypothetical subsea LNG pipeline then testing the functionality of their pipeline using Osobots.
Students found this a fascinating and eye-opening experience into what the world of STEM could hold for them.
I enjoyed programming the "bots" the most because it is really interactive, fun and engaging. My thought about STEM careers is that it's critically important because right now one of our biggest problems is climate change which happened due to a variety of reasons. It is important to use our STEM knowledge to attempt to fix it to live in a sustainable way. – Hanna Gin Miranda
I enjoyed drawing the pipe and its environment on the sheet. A career in STEM requires a passion for the career and an enthusiastic attitude. – Max Drew
I enjoyed learning about what jobs are available in STEM. I think STEM Careers look very interesting and more diverse than I thought. – Sophie Roberts
It was fun to try and solve problems with friends. Having a STEM career would be interesting and exciting. – Lucian Fairhall
