Students visit the Law Courts
In the last week of Term 2 (1 – 4 July) all of the Year 9 Humanity and Social Sciences (HASS) classes embarked on an excursion to the Francis Burt Law Education Centre. This excursion was designed to enhance the student's understanding of the Law, and the procedures and personnel involved in Australia's Court system.
All of the students were invited to take part in a role play of a mythical case of a serious assault following a teenage party. The students were invited to dress up in the regalia of a Judge, a Prosecuting Lawyer, a Defence Lawyer, a Police Officer, various witnesses and, of course, the accused. Many photographs abound of our students playing these parts. Their level of engagement and understanding of court practices was a delight to see.
Students also had the privilege of attending some real life court cases. We had the opportunity to sit in the public gallery of a variety of District and Magistrates Courts. The cases included Bail applications, Forgery and Fraud, Common Assault, and Home Invasion and Assault. Our students are to be commended on their exemplary behaviour. The HASS staff believe that it was a valuable learning experience, and would like to extend our thanks to the parents and guardians of Year 9 students for their support in running this excursion.
