Solvents solve General Chemistry's first Investigation

Year 11 General Chemistry students have been investigating the different types of separation techniques and in particular the use of paper chromatography to separate the coloured dyes in black ink. These photos show the students working hard on their investigation using different solvents and chromatography paper to see which solvent worked the best to separate out the dyes.  The students planned, assessed risk, trialled and prepared all of the chromatography method themselves and then gathered the data to present. They then wrote a validation to show what they had learnt about the technique. The Science Learning Area is very proud of our hard working Year 11 and 12 students and all the terrific work that the lower school teachers have put in with the students is really paying off. The students were methodical, gathered very good results, worked safely and collaboratively to see the investigation through.
