PARTY Program opens Year 11s eyes
On Wednesday 24 July the Year 11 Health students travelled to Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) to participate in the Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth (P.A.R.T.Y.) Program.
The P.A.R.T.Y. Program allowed the students to experience the journey of an imaginary trauma patient from the hospital Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit and Trauma Wards at RPH. Students were also fortunate to meet and hear stories from previous trauma patients and see the significant impact these injuries have had on their lives.
"It was really rewarding to have people speak about their personal life and how they ended up the way they are. It shows that it can literally happen to anyone and if you take part in risky behaviours one day they'll eventually catch up to you" - Zoe H
"It was good to see the actual recovery process, such as rehabilitation, as it opened our eyes to how much hard work people have to put in to enable themselves to get better." – James D
"I really enjoyed everything about the excursion however I particularly enjoyed the practical physiotherapy session where we completed the same rehabilitation exercises the patients have to." – Elouise I
"The excursion was really enjoyable and it was great to get a practical hands on exposure to different activities. I also enjoyed hearing the stories that were told and seeing what happened to them and their experiences." – Taya H
With the knowledge gained participating in the program, students are now able to better recognise and analyse their behaviour, choices and decision-making which could ultimately lead to a reduction in future injury and mortality rates.
