Year 7 Masterclass Pitch Their Ideas
At the conclusion of Term 1 students were selected into our Inaugural Year 7 Masterclass for demonstrating academic leadership in one or more of these subjects; Maths, English, Science or HASS. In addition to their normal timetable students unpacked 'what to do with an idea". Based on the picture book of the same title students extended their thinking and applied it in a systematic way to develop an idea of their own.
Students began by investigating world changing ideas of influential people such as; Boyan Slat, Dr Fiona Wood and Ava Lovelace. Learning and applying efficient study techniques such as Mind Mapping and Timelines they unpacked these ideas to identify how ideas are developed, identifying pitfalls and how people navigate through these challenges to refine and further develop these ideas. Students then made observations of their world, in particular as it had just been radically altered due to the current pandemic. Through these observations and others, students brainstormed potential ideas and set about developing their ideas. Students shared their progress with peers, teachers and parents to evaluate and refine their ideas over the last few months.
On Friday 31 July Masterclass students shared their ideas and how they have developed or are still developing their ideas with students from Year 8 and 10 Academic Extension Program. Students have received more feedback about their ideas, and the understanding that ideas can continually evolve even after completion was instilled in students. Students saw their ideas as more than a school project and the John Forrest Community has already seen the benefit of new curriculum and friendship based clubs and opportunities to improve the community of John Forrest.
