No monkeying around for Psychology Students
How can you teach an orphaned Penguin to swim and catch fish? How can you give baby Bolivian Squirrel Monkeys a medical check-up when their parents hide them from zoo medical staff? How can you safely give an aggressive Slow Loris antibacterial ointment for a minor foot infection?
Year 12 ATAR Psychology students visited Perth Zoo in Week 6 this term (Thursday 12 March) to learn how zookeepers manage and shape animal behaviour. The staff at Perth Zoo use a variety of theory-based learning strategies to provide and care for the safety and wellbeing of all animals at the zoo.
Students had opportunities to apply their knowledge of theories and processes of learning, solving hypothetical zoo-based problems such as those mentioned above, as part of their assessment.
The class had a great day of learning at Perth Zoo, dumping the books to discover how theory really is put into practice.
