Students make a fruity bang for Science Week
During Science Week 2021 in week 5, the Year 8 Enrichment class entered the 'Big Watermelon Experiment Challenge,' that included Physics, Forces and flying fruit.
The purpose of the experiment was to test whether the force of rubber bands can implode or explode a fully grown watermelon. Students tested different variables such as rubber band size, freshness of the watermelon, shape, rind and width. Students predicted in their hypothesis how many rubber bands it would take to explode a watermelon. Some students questioned whether it would work at all, based on their calculations and the predicted elastic energy and force applied to the watermelons.
However, each group succeeded in their hypothesis, and were able to collect data to enter the Watermelon Challenge competition. It was a lot of fun and thank you to all our student helpers on the day.
