Health Expo 2021
On Wednesday 18 August students from all year groups were invited to explore and participate in the JFSC Health Expo 2021. This annual event was organised and run by the Year 12 Health Studies students as part of a major assessment task.
Students had to choose a health issue concerning young people, write some focus questions to conduct their research and create an engaging stall for the expo. Students then set up stalls to display and share the knowledge and research obtained as part of their course studies.
Visitors were able to interact with the 23 different stalls and activities on offer throughout the school day. In total our Year 12 students made up 12 stalls whilst external agencies made up a further 11 stalls. The outside agencies included Community Police, AA, Salvation Army, YEP Project, Sexual HQ, WA school canteen association, Dental Care, Mission Australia, Zero to Hero, Helping Minds and Living Proud. Thank you to these agencies for attending the JFSC Health Expo 2021 and sharing your knowledge with our students.
The Year 12 students did an outstanding job and were completely exhausted by the end of the day. Some of the comments from students are below:
The Health Expo allowed us to use our gained knowledge of specific health topics and share it with the rest of the school, in an engaging and interactive way. By visual and practical examples students were able to grasp particular health concepts and ask inquisitive questions. – Pia & Georgie
The health expo was a day where different stands come to school and raise awareness about common health topics. The Year 12 health classes organised the allocated topics for our assessment and the organisations came along. The students learned a lot about smoking and the causes/effects it can have on you in the long term. – Maria & Angela
The health expo was about us being able to teach a topic we have been studying in class to other students at our school. Our stall was to teach students about types of contraception. What I took out of the day was a lot of students are uneducated about methods of contraception and a lot of them found it to be an embarrassing subject. – Caitlyn & Rhythm
The day was about educating and informing students of common health issues that need to be addressed but in an engaging format. The students learnt a piece of more in-depth information about each group's chosen health topics such as statistics about the health issue, the risk factors, the complications, ways to prevent it, external agencies that offer support and service, etc. It was very engaging. – Hanna & Siddhi
