Year 12 Chemistry and Physics ATAR Students Visit UWA
On Monday 15 February Year 12 ATAR Physics and Chemistry Students visited UWA. The students started in School of Molecular Science where they completed a First Year Chemistry experiment in the synthesis and purification of aspirin. The final results were a bit variable but many of the student managed to produce nice clean crystals of aspirin as their final product.
After lunch the students went to the School of Physics, Mathematics and Computing to participate in a range of hands on activities. The activities included; investigation of the effects of cryogenic liquids on various materials, an introduction to magnetism, exploring the links between magnetism and electricity, examining superconductors and magnetic levitation, and an introduction to the concept of angular momentum. Interestingly one of the demonstrators in Physics was Brandon Preap, a former JFSC student (Class of 2017) who is just starting his Master in a Medical Physics degree.
