The Blanket Activity - Koora Waangkininy Boodjar

Tuesday 7 March 2023 saw all John Forrest Year 10 students participate in an immersive activity which guided them through colonisation from the perspective of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The activity highlighted the trauma experienced by Aboriginal peoples during the many stages of European contact and allowed students to reflect on the links with their own experiences.

Aboriginal Network Support Coordinator's Renarta Coyne and Charmaine Climo placed the students on blankets representing Aboriginal land and provided information on Western Australian Aboriginal history and people.

The sessions were an informative and emotional experience, especially when during the role play, Aboriginal people left their land and children were taken away from their mothers.

This emphasised the importance of land, culture and family throughout time.

JFSC would like to thank both Renarta and Charmaine for giving their time and expertise and expanding our knowledge of WA Aboriginal history.
