Celebrating NAIDOC Week 2023
For Our Elders is the theme for the 2023 National NAIDOC Week.
This has encouraged us all to take the time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander generations that came before us. Honouring those who teach, nurture and care for loved ones. Those elders who provide countless life lessons, invaluable cultural knowledge and stories of struggles experienced.
Looking back is an important step in moving forward. It offers an opportunity to create a better future.
This month's celebrations serve as a reminder to recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. An opportunity for all Australians, from different backgrounds, to participate and honour the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. To hear their stories, understand their background and continue to support them in future.
This year we pay our respect to Elders who have passed and those who continue their unique and precious role for their families and community.
Our school hosted a morning tea, with a traditional smoking ceremony performed by Willy Ponton, a proud Ballardong Boodja man and parent within our school community.
