Championing Food Security
The Year 9 Geography Students were involved in the CARAD (Centre for Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Detainees) food security project, where it provided them with a unique educational experience that bridged classroom learning with real world challenges.
The college has been involved in the project as part of the Year 9 curriculum for four years. The project starts out with an in-depth research component where the students examine global food insecurity, analyse the effects of climate change on food production, and explore adoptive measures that farmers employ to mitigate these impacts. The research portion helps to inform the students about international issues and enhance their understanding of how climate variability can disrupt food supply chains.
The practical aspect of the project include fundraising for CARAD and gathering food donations from their friends and neighbours for the recipients. They created culturally appropriate packs containing pantry staples, such as rice and legumes, and avoiding canned goods such as baked beans to better suit the needs of the recipients. The students also included personalised messaged from the students, including works of welcome and encouragement.
The CARAD project continues to equip our students with knowledge of global issues and empowering them to make meaningful contributions to their community.
