Astronaut Katherine Bennell-Pegg
Our Year 9 science students were invited to an online talk by Australian astronaut Katherine Bennell-Pegg from the Australian Space Agency. Katherine spoke about her training and the process of becoming an astronaut. She explained how her high school education, followed by her engineering degree, shaped her journey.
Katherine has worked in Europe on a range of space projects before returning to Australia with her family to join the Australian Space Agency. She has recently become the Director of Space Technology for the Agency. In 2024, Katherine became the first person to train as an astronaut under the Australian flag.
Katherine also highlighted the importance of teamwork during astronaut training, explaining how individuals work together using their different strengths to achieve shared objectives. She encouraged students to dream big, stay interested in science, and pursue careers in space science and exploration.
